We study how children conceive of social phenomena — for example, how children explain why social disparities exist, organize people into identity-based social categories, and reason about socioeconomic hierarchies. We study the factors that shape these conceptions (e.g., personal experiences, formal education, and intuitive theories) as well as their downstream consequences (e.g., on beliefs, motivation, and intergroup attitudes).
